What Is Vintage?

A closer look at Magpie's newly revived collection

At Magpie, we’ve always been drawn to jewellery with a story — pieces that have lived a little, travelled through time, and still hold something luminous. That’s why we’ve quietly been building our Estate collection over the years, and now, we’re ready to reintroduce it with fresh eyes and a new name: ♡ Magpie 𝓋𝒾𝓃𝓉𝒶𝑔𝑒

But what exactly is vintage? And how is it different from antique or estate jewellery? Let’s break it down.

Antique vs. Vintage vs. Estate: What's the Difference?

These terms often get used interchangeably, but there are a few helpful distinctions:

  • Antique jewellery refers to pieces that are at least 100 years old. Think Edwardian lockets, Art Nouveau enamel, or Victorian mourning rings.

  • Vintage typically refers to jewellery that’s 20 to 100 years old. These pieces capture the design trends and cultural mood of their time—whether that’s a bold gold chain from the 1980s or a delicate Midcentury cluster ring.

  • Estate simply means “pre-owned.” It’s a catch-all term for secondhand jewellery, regardless of age.

So, not all estate jewellery is vintage. And not all vintage jewellery is antique. But each category offers something distinct—and collectible.

Why Vintage?

Vintage jewellery carries a unique charm that’s hard to replicate. Whether it’s a particular setting style no longer in production, a weightier gold alloy, or the subtle patina that only comes with age, these pieces feel different. They're often a bit bolder, a bit more idiosyncratic, and they weren’t made to be fast fashion—they were made to last.

For many, wearing vintage is also a conscious choice. It’s a way to honour craftsmanship, reduce consumption, and wear something truly one-of-a-kind. A vintage piece often brings a story with it—one that continues with you.

Our Approach at Magpie

Over the years, we’ve been quietly collecting vintage and estate pieces through trusted sources and personal relationships. Each item is inspected, appraised, and restored where needed. Some come in just as they are—others get a little polish, a minor repair, or a new life with a different stone or chain.

We’ve given this corner of the shop a new name—Magpie Vintage—but the spirit remains the same: to offer beautiful, storied pieces with substance and style.

You’ll find rings from the 1940s and 1970s, bold 1980s chains, and delicate bands that look as contemporary now as they did 60 years ago. It’s not a replica or reproduction. It’s the real thing.

Where to Explore

The collection lives primarily at our Glebe location, with select pieces available to view online. Because most items are one-of-a-kind, the inventory changes regularly. When something speaks to you, don’t wait too long—it might be gone the next time you check.

A Few Things to Know When Shopping Vintage

  • Sizing: Many vintage rings can be resized, but not all. Always ask if you’re unsure.

  • Hallmarks & Alloys: Older pieces often use different karat gold or finishes—this can affect care and value.

  • Wearability: Some pieces are delicate; others are solid enough to become daily staples. If you’re not sure how a piece will fit into your lifestyle, we’re always happy to talk it through.

Whether you're drawn to the design, the sustainability, or the sheer romance of the past, vintage jewellery offers something singular. We’re so excited to give this collection a new platform—and invite you to explore it in your own time and your own way.
