A broken chain. A ring that doesn’t get worn anymore. An inherited piece that means something, but doesn’t suit your style. A single earring with no match.

These aren’t the end of the story—they’re the beginning of a new one.

At Magpie Jewellery, our custom program has always included repurposing. Since the early 1990's, working with existing gold and gemstones has been a core part of what we do. With the rising cost of gold, it has become even more relevant, but the reason people choose it hasn’t changed: they want to wear their jewellery again.

Repurposing jewellery is the process of taking your existing materials—gold, diamonds, and gemstones—and redesigning them into something new. That can mean resetting stones into a new design, combining multiple pieces into one, melting down gold to create a completely new setting, or updating older styles into something more wearable today. Nothing gets thrown away unnecessarily. The materials stay, the design changes.

Cost plays a role. Gold is expensive, and using what you already have often makes more sense than starting from scratch. But most clients come to us for a different reason: their jewellery no longer fits their life. Styles change. Hands change. Sentimental pieces get tucked away because they don’t feel practical anymore. Repurposing lets you keep what matters while changing what doesn’t work.

Every project starts with what you bring in. We look at your pieces, talk through what you like and don’t like, and figure out what can be reused. From there, we evaluate stones and metals, discuss design direction, and refine a new concept before building a piece that uses your original materials in a new way. Some clients come in with a clear idea. Others just bring a box and start the conversation. Both work.

The goal is simple: a piece you actually want to wear again. Not something that stays in a drawer, and not something that feels like “old jewellery,” but a finished piece that fits your current style using the materials you already own.

Repurposing isn’t about replacing meaning—it’s about giving it a new form. If you have pieces you don’t wear anymore, they don’t have to stay unfinished stories. They can become something you reach for again.
