Emerald’s colour is what draws you in first — a green that feels deep, saturated, and almost alive. But that colour isn’t just surface. It’s the result of very specific conditions, trace elements, and a bit of geological luck.
Emerald is a variety of the mineral beryl, and its colour comes from trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. These elements become part of the crystal structure as the stone forms, creating that unmistakable green. Not all green beryl qualifies as emerald — it’s the presence of chromium that gives emerald its richness and depth, separating it from lighter or more muted green stones.
This stone has been prized for thousands of years, with records tracing back to ancient Egypt and the mines associated with Cleopatra. It moved through Greek and Roman cultures as a symbol of status, protection, and insight, and later became a favourite among European royalty. Across cultures, emerald has been linked to growth, renewal, and clarity — ideas that feel closely tied to its colour.
Unlike many other gemstones, emerald isn’t defined by clarity. Most stones contain visible inclusions formed during growth, known as jardin, meaning “garden” in French. These internal features often resemble moss or branching landscapes, and rather than being seen as imperfections, they’re part of what makes each emerald individual.
On the Mohs scale, emerald ranks between 7.5 and 8, making it suitable for jewellery. However, hardness doesn’t tell the whole story. Due to its internal structure and inclusions, emerald can be more prone to chipping or fracturing than other stones. It doesn’t always respond well to impact, pressure, or sudden temperature changes, which means it benefits from thoughtful wear and care.
