Two of the most common methods you’ll hear about are cast jewellery and hand-forged rings — each offering its own unique strengths, craftsmanship, and beauty.
Cast jewellery begins with a model, either hand-carved in wax or designed digitally, which is then used to create a mould. Molten gold, platinum, or silver is poured or injected into that mould to form the piece. This process allows for incredible precision and creativity — from intricate filigree to organic, sculptural designs. Because of its versatility, casting is the most widely used method in modern engagement ring design, allowing jewellers to achieve consistent quality while maintaining exceptional artistry and finish. When crafted with care, a cast engagement ring is durable, beautifully detailed, and completely customizable — from the metal alloy to the gemstone layout.
Hand-forged or hand-fabricated jewellery, on the other hand, is shaped directly from solid metal using tools, fire, and the maker’s skill. The goldsmith hammers, saws, bends, and solders each part by hand, building the ring from the ground up. This method is often chosen for bespoke engagement rings or minimalist designs that highlight the craft itself — where subtle textures and the maker’s touch tell part of the story.
Both casting and hand-forging can produce exquisite, long-lasting fine jewellery when done by skilled artisans. A cast ring can be every bit as strong, personal, and meaningful as one that’s hand-forged — and vice versa. What truly matters is the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and integrity of the maker.
