Aquamarine, the blue variety of the mineral beryl, has been admired for centuries for its luminous clarity and oceanic colour. Its name comes from the Latin aqua marina, meaning “water of the sea,” a fitting description for a gemstone that ranges from the palest sea foam to deeper blue tones. Its colour is caused by trace amounts of iron within the crystal, and on the Mohs hardness scale Aquamarine ranks 7.5 to 8 — durable enough for everyday wear, yet refined enough to showcase exceptional transparency and light.

For much of history, Aquamarine has been inseparable from the sea. Ancient lore suggested the gem came from the treasure chests of sirens, and sailors adopted it as a talisman believed to promise safe voyages, good luck, and protection against the dangers of open water. The ancient Greeks carved talismans of Poseidon, god of the sea, into Aquamarine, strengthening its association with water and divine guardianship.

Its remarkable clarity also linked Aquamarine to sight and perception. Nearly 2,000 years ago, the Roman emperor Nero reportedly used thin slices of Aquamarine to improve his vision. In Germany, early lenses were fashioned from beryl, the mineral family that includes Aquamarine, giving rise to the word Brille — meaning glasses. As blue beryl, Aquamarine is closely related to emerald, its green counterpart, sharing the same mineral structure but expressing itself in an entirely different hue.

Over time, Aquamarine earned the nickname “Magic Mirror.” Fortune tellers believed its clear depths could reveal hidden truths and even offer glimpses of the future. Spanish legend later connected the gem to the mythical Fountain of Youth sought by explorer Juan Ponce de León, reinforcing its long-standing associations with renewal and vitality.

Ancient Egyptians greatly admired Aquamarine for both its beauty and symbolism. Beads and amulets crafted from the gem have been discovered in tombs and burial sites, preserved for millennia as symbols of happiness and everlasting youth.

Today, Aquamarine is recognized as the modern birthstone for March. With its balance of durability, clarity, and centuries of folklore, it continues to bridge ancient belief and contemporary jewellery design — a gemstone shaped by water, light, and stories.
